Encouraging young children to be more independent helps them to gain confidence and responsibility. It also helps them develop good problem-solving skills and prepares them for the future. Here are some ways to encourage your little one to be more independent.
- Give him/her choices. Offer small choices as often as possible such as what to eat for snack, what color shirt to wear or what book to read next.
- Let children do simple tasks alone. Dressing themselves, brushing their teeth, washing their hands or putting on their shoes are just a few examples. Give them guidance if needed but try not to interfere.
- Have children help with cleaning and other chores. Putting away toys, setting the table, or watering plants help children understand responsibility and make them feel part of the household.
- Let children solve their own problems, is possible. If your child is having trouble finishing a puzzle, give them guidance and words of encouragement rather than finishing the puzzle for them.
- Use positive reinforcement whenever possible. Most people flourish in positive environments. Celebrate successes, no matter how small to encourage your toddler. You can always find something to praise!
While encouraging independence is important, it is also important to support and guide your child when needed. Be sure your child knows he/she can ask for help if needed. Finding a balance is the key to making children feel confident and secure. Be sure to gradually give your preschooler more responsibility to help them develop a positive mindset of self-reliance and problem-solving.
