Colorful fall leaves with a background of clear, blue sky

In addition to being fun, playing outside in the crisp autumn air has many benefits.

  • Cooler temperatures encourage children to be active without overheating. Running, jumping, and climbing build strength, coordination, and endurance.
  • Exposure to natural light helps with Vitamin D absorption which is essential to bone health and immune function.
  • Regularly playing outdoors can help improve a child’s immune system. It also allows their bodies to more easily adjust to cooler temperatures.
  • Studies have show that sending time outdoors helps a child focus and concentrate when in the classroom. Outdoor time can also reduce stress and calm children.

Playing outdoor is an important part of raising healthy, well-adjusted children. What is your family’s favorite outdoor activities in the fall? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt. Create a list of items such as acorn, pine code, red leaf, smooth rock, etc.
  • Leaf Pile. Rake up fallen leaves and let your children jump and play in the piles.
  • Storytime. Pick a cozy outdoor spot and read some fall-themed books.  Plan a trip to your local library to pick out some books.
  • Acorn Toss. Set up a basket or buck a few feet away and let children toss acorns or small pinecones into it.
  • Make Leaf Rubbings. Pick out leaves with interesting shapes and textures. Leaves with bumpy sides and veins work well. Place white paper over the leaf on a flat surface, bumpy side up. Rub pencils or crayons over the to create a rubbing.
