Shorter days and falling leaves tend to come with dropping temperatures. Now is the time to make sure your child is prepared for chilly days at their preschool or daycare to keep them warm and comfortable.

Check your child’s extra clothes. When the seasons change, be sure to check your child’s extra clothing. Switch out shorts and tank tops for warmer clothing for colder months.

Layer clothing. Often, mornings can be chilly and afternoons can warm up considerably. Ensure your child is comfortable by layering his/her cloths so that warmer clothes can be removed as the temperature rises.

Choose water-resistant, easy to use coats. Winter coats should be warm but also keep out rain and snow. For younger children, Velcro fasteners, easy-to-use zippers, and large buttons help children be independent.

Don’t forget footwear! Being outdoors during cold or wet weather means your child’s feet can get wet or cold easily. Choose cold weather footwear that is water resistant and sturdy. Outdoor play in cold temperatures can be fun.

Moisturize!  Cold weather and indoor heating systems can cause skin to become dry and flaky. Use gentle moisturizer on your child’s face and hands daily to prevent chapping. Also, encourage your child to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Remember gloves, hats and scarfs! When the winter winds begin to blow, your child will need some additional protection. A hat, gloves and even a scarf can ensure your child stays toasty during cold weather.

During cold weather months, children can benefit greatly from playing outdoors. Be sure your child is ready! At Kiwanis Daycare Center, we let children play outdoors weather permitting. If you have any concerns for your child during the colder months, please talk with his/her teacher.
