A small child dressed up for Halloween getting candy from a young lady in costume

Halloween is an exciting time for many children and family. Making sure your celebrations are safe is important to keep the holiday worry-free and fun for everyone.

Costume Safety – Choose bright, reflective costumes that are visible to drivers in the area. Glow sticks and flashlights can also help. Make sure costumes fix properly to prevent tripping or falls and allow your children to see out any masks or coverings.

Candy Safety. Adults should look over any candy and treats to ensure packaging is not damaged or opened. Unless it comes from a close friend or family member, discard any homemade treats.

Street Safety. If you are taking your child  trick or treating, be sure to follow all traffic laws, teach children to use crosswalks and stay on sidewalks where possible. Teach children to look both ways when crossing the street and listen for vehicles.

Many communities have alternative Halloween or Harvest parties. Be sure to check out these fun events as a safe alternative to trick or treating.
