When summer temperatures hit the upper 90s and beyond, many families think of lakes, pools, and spray parks as a way to cool off. While these are great options to beat the sweltering temperatures, make sure. your day is safe with these precautions:
- Dress your child in appropriate attire. Don’t forget the swim diapers for those who are not potty trained. It is not advised to use regular clothing for swimming as it can get heavy when wet and weigh down your child.
- Never leave your toddler alone near water, even those shallow backyard pools. It only takes a second for something to go terribly wrong.
- Keep your toddler within arm’s reach while in or near the water. A quick reaction can often prevent any issues.
- While swim devices such as arm floaties or life jackets can give you peace of mind, do not let your guard down. Children, especially young toddlers, can still get into trouble.
- Enroll your child in a swimming class as early as possible. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends children as young as one year old learn to swim.
- Take a CPR class. Being prepared for an emergency can make all the difference.
